Practice the conversations that matter.

GRACE Lab is building interactive role-play experiences for nursing students—helping them explore patient perspectives, practice communication, and reflect on their choices.

INTERACTIVE PREVIEW · FICTIONAL SCENARIO

A moment of uncertainty.

You are a nursing student. A patient shares a concern before the next step in their care.

  1. Patient

I know you are busy, but I feel worried about what happens next.

A response to consider

“What is worrying you most right now?”

The interactive preview is unavailable here. Consider how an open question could invite the patient to share.

Two choices. Room to reflect.

MEET GRACE

A small moment.
A meaningful choice.

Gamified Role-play for Affective and Cognitive Empathy. A learning tool in development for nursing students to explore communication through patient conversations.

Hear the patient’s perspective.

Scenarios designed around a person’s concerns, emotions, and questions.

Consider your next words.

A role-play approach that invites different responses to the same moment.

Make space for reflection.

Prompts designed to revisit what you said, what you noticed, and what you might try next.

These are product design priorities. The fictional preview above illustrates the approach.

BUILT FOR NURSING STUDENTS

Before the real conversation,
make room to practice.

Knowing what to say can feel different from saying it. GRACE is being designed to offer a space to explore sensitive conversations through fictional role-play.

Explore a fictional moment
01

Listen beyond the first sentence.

Consider the concern behind a patient’s words.

02

Try a response. Notice what follows.

Explore how different words can shape a fictional conversation.

03

Bring questions into debriefing.

Use reflection as a starting point for discussion with an educator or facilitator.

For educators: we welcome conversations about scenario design and facilitated learning.

THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Listen. Choose. Reflect.

The journey we’re designing, illustrated in the preview.

  1. 01

    Choose a scenario

Begin with a patient’s situation and a moment worth exploring.

  2. 02

    Make decisions

Consider what you would say and choose a response.

  3. 03

    Explore outcomes

Notice how a fictional conversation unfolds along a different path.

  4. 04

    Reflect

Revisit the patient’s perspective and your communication choices.

Reflection can be supported by a facilitator. The underlying GRACE instructional model includes prebriefing, simulation, debriefing, and evaluation.

WHAT WE’RE BUILDING

Thoughtful practice.
Step by step.

GRACE is an early-stage initiative. We’re connecting learning design and prototype development before making claims about learning outcomes.

Development focus

A clearer role-play experience.

Refining the instructional model, patient scenarios, communication choices, and reflection approach.

Future exploration

Support for scenario creation and reflection.

Exploring AI-assisted authoring and learning feedback. These are proposed directions; AI is not integrated into this website or presented as a verified GRACE feature.

RESEARCH FOUNDATION

Grounded in learning science.

Originating in doctoral research in Technology and Vocational Education, GRACE connects empathy learning and interactive role-play. Development and validation are ongoing; learning effectiveness has not yet been established.

OUR STARTING POINT

Human connection,
at the heart of learning.

GRACE Lab is an early-stage healthcare EdTech initiative. Our starting point is nursing education: translating a research-grounded learning approach into opportunities to listen, consider a response, and reflect.
